What We Do

ISDP utilizes an integrated approach in its scope of intervention and implementation of its programs which try to address prevailing social problems and needs.
We are relentlessly committed to taking full responsibility and providing excellence in every project & endeavor we undertake. At ISDP, we pride ourselves on taking on big challenges and seeing them through within a set budget and time.

ISDP’s interventions and activities focus on the following thematic areas;

1. Protection

We focus to provide response in creating safe environment for displaced communities in Somalia. As a result of limited government authority in Somalia, many individuals face violence and risks included but not limited; forced displacement, gender-based violence, child rights violations, arbitrary detention, forced recruitment particularly of children, “deportation”, evictions, forced relocation, and family separation.

Target groups are; the most vulnerable members of the community including; women and children, and minority groups. Vulnerable members of a community do not always have equal access to humanitarian assistance. ISDP also implements a Child Protection program within the Puntland State of Somalia.

The program includes documentation of incidences of violations against children especially the Six Major Violations outlined in the UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1523. Form its Health Facilities, ISDP give treatment to survivors of SGBV/GBV. And also provide child protection program that includes Investigation, documentation, Monitoring, providing care and protection.

2. Health Program

With the support of various donors, ISDP has established health facilities that provide reproductive and primary health services to women, children and the community at large. Under the health program ISDP also run mobile clinics in the community and IDP settlements within its target areas. Some of the services provided are outpatient services, delivery, safe motherhood and child survival, immunization, referral services, prenatal and postnatal care among other services.

The health facilities are also used to conduct health awareness sessions on the importance of visiting health facilities, immunization, and breastfeeding among other health issues. We believe access to health is both a fundamental human right and a key issue for development. Aimed to increase coverage of health services, improve quality of health services through innovative approaches, and improve informed demand of these health services.

We target to train health workers, educate parents, distribute needed supplies and provide care to keep children healthy. We stand to reduce the suffering of Somalis, since Somalia, have some of the highest infant, child, and maternal mortality rates in the world.

3. Nutrition program

ISDP nutrition programs are aimed at improving and enhancing the capacity of women on proper nutrition intake for the well being of the community. The nutrition program under the support of various donors mainly WFP and UNICEF have established stabilization centers, outpatient therapeutic services for the treatments of moderate acute malnutrition, severe acute malnutrition for distribution of food ratios to pregnant, lactating, infants and children.

The services are provided during ISDP conducts awareness sessions on infant and young children feeding (IYCF, nutrition hygiene health promotion (NHHP) activities to increase the knowledge and practice of the community on essential nutrition behaviors and conduct capacity building sessions on integrated Management of acute malnutrition (IMAM) to health workers.

4. Education program

Since its establishment in 2010 ISDP worked towards assisting the children, this assistance include offering basic education to children from the less privileged families, IDPs and marginalized communities. The program, aims at encouraging and motivating children from the displaced communities to have zeal in
obtaining education.

Provision of basic education to these children is aimed at contributing to the reduction of illiteracy in the IDP camps and marginalized communities. With basic education, boys and girls from these communities will qualify to pursue skills training programs hence break the cycle of poverty that has been a hallmark of these communities.

5. Integrated Livelihood

ISDP offers trainings which include midwifery, nursing, First Aid, Community health, vocational soft skill training and capacity building trainings. The beneficiaries of the program are the IDPs, refugees, asylum seekers and host community. The project beneficiaries vary depending on their education level.

Some of them are high school graduates who cannot afford to further their education and learners with literacy and numeracy. We work to improve the livelihood opportunities among poor communities.

We design projects in a way that they are self sustainable and promote income generating, in order to boost food provision to the target beneficiaries. Our targets are; women headed HHs, Children, Drought Displaced HHs, Conflict Displaced HHs, and less privileged members of the society

6. Resilience

We are committed to address humanitarian and development work in situations of recurrent shocks and crisis. It’s important to build the resilience chronically vulnerable Somali people, households, communities and systems to climatic shocks and other related risks.

ISDP has provided humanitarian assistance to families and communities affected by shocks and disasters from the provision of food items to families affected by disasters to digging of shallow wells and provision of shelter and non-food items to IDP families.

7. WASH Program

The water, sanitation and hygiene component comprises of hygiene awareness sessions, construction of water structures (shallow well, water reservoirs), water trucking, rehabilitation and construction of pit latrines and hand washing facilities and advocacy on the stopping open defecation.

8. Youth Youth Engagement Engagement

We support youth groups in Somalia. They are very vulnerable and face problems, which include: Unemployment, Lack of skills, Insecurity, Migration and among others. At ISDP we believe the youths are the biggest assets and human resource for a community if constructively engaged and empowered by preparing them to be active citizens in the reconstruction and rebuilding of their communities and the country as a whole.

When young people are involved in responsible, challenging actions which require critical thinking, problem solving and making decisions gives them the opportunity to present their views and interest hence contribute in social change. ISDP as an organization conducts projects activities where young people are provided with conducive environment to highlight and discuss some issues within the community that affect them.

Our Needs

Infrastructure

ISDP’s long term plan for expansion is construction of Health Posts and Education Centers for women and children in all its project areas. The plan mainly envisions construction of classrooms, health centers, office room, latrines, water tanks and construction of a perimeter wall around each center. ISDP is currently running Advocacy, education and health facilities in different locations in Bosaso on rented premises. Hence the organization needs support in the construct of infrastructures to reduce the rental costs.

Recurrent Education Expenses

Running educational programs such as ISDP envision requires enormous resources to cater for learning material, teachers’ incentives and other recurrent running costs. ISDP requires financial support to meet these costs. There is also need for support to initiate a school feeding program for primary school learners in minority communities to prevent the learners from missing out of school since they work to help their parents in fending for their families.

In its program in providing medical services to its target beneficiaries, the organization needs supplies of vaccines, antibiotics, micronutrient supplements,
