ISDP Somalia

Nutrition

ISDP’s Nutrition Department is dedicated to preventing and treating malnutrition among vulnerable populations across Somalia. The program focuses on children under five, pregnant and lactating women (PLW), and other at-risk groups who are most affected by food insecurity and limited access to nutrition services.

Through community-based nutrition interventions, ISDP promotes optimal infant and young child feeding practices, supports early identification and treatment of malnutrition, and provides essential nutritional services in underserved and hard-to-reach areas. These efforts contribute to improved health outcomes and strengthened community resilience.

Departmental Objectives

  1. Address Malnutrition

ISDP aims to identify and treat cases of acute malnutrition through regular screening and the provision of appropriate treatment services for children and other vulnerable populations.

  1. Promote Optimal Feeding Practices

The department works with caregivers and communities to promote optimal Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) practices, including breastfeeding and appropriate complementary feeding, to improve child nutrition and growth.

  1. Strengthen Community Resilience

ISDP integrates nutrition interventions within broader humanitarian and community-based programs to enhance resilience and improve long-term health and nutrition outcomes.

Improving Nutrition Services in Somalia

Somalia continues to face a serious nutrition crisis driven by recurrent drought, conflict, displacement, and food insecurity. These challenges have significantly affected the nutritional status of vulnerable populations, particularly children under five and pregnant and lactating women.

ISDP works to address these challenges by delivering community-based nutrition services aimed at preventing and treating malnutrition. The organization conducts regular nutrition screening, supports the treatment of acute malnutrition, and promotes nutrition awareness among caregivers and communities.

Through these interventions, ISDP contributes to improving nutritional outcomes, strengthening community resilience, and supporting healthier futures for vulnerable populations across Somalia.
